Listed below are the research facilities associated with the FSU Department of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science that faculty, researchers and students can access in addition to the facilities — laboratories, instrumentation and computational equipment — of individual faculty members. FSU Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies
The FSU Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies performs interdisciplinary research in ocean-atmosphere-land-ice interactions to increase our understanding of the physical, social and economic consequences of climate variability. COAPS is closely aligned with EOAS and offers a strong graduate program that provides students with hands-on experience in a research institution setting, coupled with close mentorship by scientists whose research interests and expertise correspond with their own.
FSU Coastal and Marine Laboratory
Florida State University operates the Coastal and Marine Laboratory located at St. Teresa Beach on the Gulf. The facility offers a sea-going research vessel for coastal and offshore work, a fleet of small water crafts, research laboratories, housing, a computer laboratory, an auditorium, several greenhouses, classrooms, laboratories, and a fully-operational scientific diving program. Many of the EOAS faculty regularly use the facility to conduct Gulf-related research.
High Performance Computing Cluster
Faculty, researchers, and students from EOAS have access to the High Performance Computing Cluster at FSU. Researchers within EOAS gain insight into a variety of topics including, but not limited to, geophysical fluid dynamics, ocean and climate systems, and behavior of matter at extreme conditions relevant to the Earth and planetary interiors.
Marine Field Group
The Marine Field Group is a project-driven facility of EOAS. It supports projects that range from deploying current meter moorings and bottom mounted instrumentation in the deep ocean and on the continental margin to making conductivity-temperature-depth and geomorphological benthic surveys in the Gulf. The MFG also supports student educational activities focusing on the practical applications of oceanographic methods.
National High Magnetic Field Laboratory
There are approximately 11 EOAS faculty members that utilize the world-class facility of the National Science Foundation-funded, FSU-headquartered National High Magnetic Field Laboratory with research interest in chemical and biological oceanography and a range of geology. This research facility provides access to cutting-edge analytical instrumentation to identify and quantify the chemical composition of various earth materials.
National Weather Service
The Tallahassee office of the National Weather Service is co-located within the EOAS department. Faculty, students, and NWS staff collaborate on a wide range of studies. In addition, the department houses the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Cooperative Institute for Tropical Meteorology. This cooperative research has an emphasis on hurricane studies, flash floods, tropical convection and local weather.
